Gibson Pewter’s 2010 Christmas Ornament features one of Hillsborough’s most scenic and enduring landmarks, Gleason Falls Stone Arch Bridge. Built in the first half of the 19th century, this sturdy, dry masonry bridge has withstood the test of time. Its graceful single arch spans Beard Brook at Gleason Falls, a location visited by generations of local families for picnicking, fishing, wading and swimming.

Created by Jon Gibson and designed by Roger Goode of Fresh Start Creative, this ornament is the tenth and final one in the Hillsborough series. It is available for sale at Gibson Pewter and Sweet Expressions. Prior years’ ornaments are still available for sale at Gibson Pewter.

Reproduction William III Spoon

Reproduction William III Spoon

Length: 7.25″

Price: $20

Product code: S09

William III Spoon back I recently acquired an important early 18th century wavy-end bronze spoon mold at auction. The mold is engraved with a royal portrait on the top and a fanciful scroll pattern on the underside of the bowl.

Initially I thought it was of Queen Anne, but I’ve been talking with several pewter scholars recently and the consensus is it’s probably not a portrait of Queen Anne, but rather an earlier portrait of William III. This is William III, of William & Mary fame. Wow! Mary died in 1694. The mold was most likely produced/made in Boston circa 1694-1702.

William III Spoon handle Only a handful of these kinds of molds exist today, so they are as scarce as the proverbial hen’s teeth. I am indeed fortunate to have landed this wonderful mold. The overall spoon length is 7.25″ —Finished spoons sell for $20. This makes for a great soup spoon!

In the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

click image to see larger view

The Woodgrain Beaker is perhaps the most interesting cup we make. My Father and I created this cup at the suggestion of Jonathan Fairbanks, former curator of American Decorative Arts, Museum of fine Arts, Boston around 1992.

Jonathan saw our Child’s Cup with the birch grain interior and asked us to make something taller, without a handle. This cup was the end result and one of the early examples was acquired by the MFA for its permanent collection in 1993. It, along with my Father’s prize winning Fruit Bowl were the only contemporary pieces of pewter added to their collection in the 20th century! Ideal for serving Mint Juleps.

The pewter is shaped around a wooden form, or chuck, which is made from oak. Once the metal is on the form, a burnishing tool is used to apply enough pressure on the outside if the vessel to impart the grain of the form on the inside of the beaker. Truly a unique piece!
