Shop News for September/October 2011

Queen Elizabeth art quiltGreetings Friends:

Camille and I have had a very busy and productive Summer and are now settling into the Fall routine; kids back to school, soccer practice, weekend games and of course, ramping up production in our respective crafts. Be sure to check out Camille’s work at camillegibson.com to see her beautiful fiber creations which are for sale.

Hillsborough Area Artisans Open Studio Tour

I’m gearing up for the Hillsborough Area Artisans annual Open Studio Tour which takes place next weekend, September 17th & 18th 10 am – 5 pm. I’ll be metal spinning both days. Many of the Artisans are giving away door prizes and I’ve chosen to give away one of our most popular pieces, the Woodgrain Nut Bowl.

Woodgrain Nut Bowl

It’s a piece that is shaped around a wooden (oak) form and then burnished with extreme pressure which imprints the oak grain into the interior of the bowl. Come enjoy a weekend of fine craft. Maps available in my shop, or online.

Pint Tulip TankardNew Design for a Tulip Tankard…
One of a Kind?

A friend who is a customer asked me to make him a Pint Tulip Tankard a long time ago. He checks in from time to time to see how I’ve progressed with his request. I finally created a piece which I think he’ll enjoy looking at and enjoy using. This is a brand new design, combining the graceful lines of the tulip mug with a tankard lid.

I’m even thinking about making more! If you like the look and think I should, go to Gibson Pewter on Facebook and comment, or like under the Tankard photo.

Pint Tulip TankardAntique of the Month

This month we’re offering a SUPERB elongated pear shaped coffeepot made and marked by Roswell Gleason, Dorchester, Mass. 1821-71.

Pint Tulip TankardThis piece is pristine inside and out and retains its original wooden finial button. A wonderful addition to any collection.

We hope to see many of you next weekend and wish you all a happy Fall!

Shop News for July 2011

Greetings from Gibson Pewter.

Hammered Pewter Fruit Bowl

The League of New Hampshire Craftsmen’s Fair is approaching quickly, August 6 –14 and will be held again at the Mount Sunapee State park in Newbury NH.

I’ve made a special piece this year which I intend to unveil in the Living With Crafts exhibit at the fair. It is a Hammered Fruit Bowl that was inspired by the work of the late Fred Pulsifer, a pewterer from Exeter, NH, whom I watched at the fair with my father, back in the 1970′s.

The bowl is hammered entirely with paper mallets over wooden forms and the four panel base is reticulated, a process which involves extreme heat and fast quenching with a moist cloth. Tricky work, but the end result is quite dramatic.

I’m not sure if I’m going to make another, so if you want this one, you’ll have to travel to Sunapee in your Brink’s truck and be prepared to shell out $1,200. The Fruit Bowl is about 12″ square, stands 6″ tall and weighs nearly 9 lbs.!

Losts of New Visitors this year

Living History Famil Photo Summer is in full swing and it is refreshing to have visits from old friends and long time customers. As expected, we’ve seen many new faces in the shop this year thanks in part to the article, “The New New England Heirlooms,” in the April edition of Yankee Magazine. In spite of the mixed reviews about the economy, our sales are up this year and we would like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support.

Living History Famil Photo Come for the Living History Event

Hillsborough’s 3rd Annual Living History Event is scheduled for August 20 & 21 this year. Mark your calendars. It’s a great, educational town wide event with over 200 re-enactors that’s fun for the whole family. I’ll be demonstrating metal spinning, or casting all day Saturday, the 19th!

Antique of the Month

Living History Famil Photo This month’s antique is a scarce American 3″ beaker marked by Timothy Boardman & Co, New York City, 1822-1824. The beaker is well marked with some minor exterior pitting and slightly more interior pitting from use. Overall condition is very good.

We look forward to seeing, or hearing from you this summer! With all good wishes,

Jon & Camille Gibson

Gibson Pewter barn at Historic Hillsborough Center

Come Visit Our Historic Hillsborough Center

Our historic hilltop village will once again be the back drop for the 6th annual HAA (Hillsborough Area Artisans) Spring into Summer Artisans’ Faire. Come see over 20 juried artisans exhibiting their newest creations, rain or shine, on the Old Town Common, at the Gallery at Wellsweep and of course, at Gibson Pewter on Saturday & Sunday, June 11 and 12, 10 am to 4 pm each day. I’ll be giving metal spinning demonstrations all weekend. Plenty of parking and admission is free!

New Products

I’ve had a lot of requests for a taller vase with a wider top and base. The 5th and final new design for 2011 is the Large Vase. At 8″ in height, it’s an impressive form with a gently flared top lip and 3 decorative incised lines. This is a gift you may want for yourself!

18th century pewter mugs and tankards with acanthus leaf handle designs are quite rare and therefore quite desirable to collectors. I was fortunate to acquire and 18th century English export tulip shaped quart mug with acanthus leaf handle last year. That mug was the inspiration for this smaller Tulip Pint Mug with Acanthus Leaf Handle. The acanthus leaf motif, an elegant feature, was also used on some high style 18th century cream pitchers.

Our new Gravy ladle is a scaled down version of the Fiddle Handle ladle. This handsome new ladle will be a useful addition at your table for holiday events and everyday meals. A great gift item!

Check out Our Video Demonstrations

My YouTube video, Hand Spinning A Pewter Baby Cup, has nearly 21,000 views thus far! We’re planning on shooting another spinning video soon. This time, our always popular Centerpiece Vase, which is spun over a sectional chuck, will be the featured piece. Stay tuned.

Antique of the Month

This month’s antique is an attractive 19th century double burner whale oil lamp made and marked by Freeman Porter, Westbrook, Maine, circa 1835-60. The lamp stands 6.5″ tall and has an acorn shaped font. The touchmark is fine and the lamp is in very good overall condition.

I hope to see many of you at the Spring into Summer Artisans faire!

Best wishes,
Jon Gibson

Shop News for April 2011

Greetings fellow pewter enthusiasts:

Living History Famil Photo With near record amounts of snow this year, it’s no wonder there is still quite a bit of the white stuff on the ground around my shop, in the fields and on the ski slopes across the valley at Crotched Mountain. But Spring is indeed here and warmer weather is not far off.

Business is picking up again, thanks in part to Yankee Magazine. I’m one of six artists featured in their article, The New New England Heirlooms, in the March/April edition on newsstands now—or online at yankeemagazine.com. What an honor to represent NH and be listed with the likes of Miranda Thomas and Simon Pearce from nearby Vermont.

New Product Announcements

I’ve added two new bowls to the product line this year. I was inspired, as is often the case, by pieces which I would like to have in my own home.

Condiment Bowl The Condiment Bowl looks like a scaled down Revere Bowl with its round bowl, flared lip and sturdy, low foot.

Dip Bowl The Dip Bowl is an ultra modern design with slightly angled straight sides. It holds 12 oz. with room to spare. Try one, or both!!

Send us photos of your Gibson Pewter.

Dip Bowl

The gentleman who commissioned 64 Shrub Cups last year shared this photo. Incidentally, I sampled the rum shrub drink and enjoyed it. We’ll post his recipe soon.

Photos may be sent with the convenient Photo Submission Form on our website

Samuel Hamlin Porringer Antique of the month

This month I’m offering a very fine 5.25″ flower handle porringer by Samuel E. Hamlin, Providence, RI – 1801-56. The linen mark is clear and crisp and the touchmark is fine as struck. The bowl on this example is quite heavy and has nice chatter marks on the central boss. A great addition to any collection!

With Best Wishes,
Jon Gibson

Season’s Greetings

Santa-Jon

Season’s Greetings from Hillsborough Center. I’m putting the finishing touches on this year’s annual Hillsborough Christmas Ornament, Gleason Falls Bridge. This ornament is the tenth and final one in the Hillsborough series. It’s a beautiful ornament and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my friend and graphic designer, Roger Goode, of Proper Pup Studio, for having a creative hand in all ten of the Hillsborough ornaments. These and prior years ornaments are still available for sale.

Gleason Falls Bridge ornament

It’s hard to believe that 2010 is coming to a close. I’d like to thank all of you for your continued support and patronage. The relationships we have forged with one another, thanks to the metal we call pewter, is meaningful and inspirational to me. I count my blessings that I am able to keep this business going forward in 2011 and I look forward to hearing from all of you.

With all good wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year to you all,

Living History Famil PhotoAlong with seven other artists and artisans, I’ve been invited to be an artist in residence at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH onThursday, December 2 from 5 to 8 pm. It’s an opportunity for museum patrons to purchase some high quality, locally made gifts for the Holiday season.

Gibson Pewter, Sissi Studio & The Gallery at Wellsweep will once again sponsor “Christmas in the Centre” here in Hillsborough Center on Saturday & Sunday, December 4 and 5, with extended hours at each studio from 10am to 7pm.

We had a successful weekend demonstrating metal spinning for the annual NH Open Doors Studio Tour in early November. Now I’m busy fulfilling early holiday orders. Speaking of the holiday season… if you’re planning a pewter Christmas, please get your orders in early as there is only one of me!

New Holiday Ornament — Last in Series

2010 Gleason Falls Bridge OrnamentGibson Pewter’s 2010 Christmas Ornament features one of Hillsborough’s most scenic and enduring landmarks, Gleason Falls Stone Arch Bridge. Built in the first half of the 19th century, this sturdy, dry masonry bridge has withstood the test of time. Its graceful single arch spans Beard Brook at Gleason Falls, a location visited by generations of local families for picnicking, fishing, wading and swimming.

Created by Jon Gibson and designed by Roger Goode of The Proper Pup Studio, this ornament is the tenth and final one in the Hillsborough series. It is available for sale at Gibson Pewter and Sweet Expressions. Prior years’ ornaments are still available for sale at Gibson Pewter.

Antique of the Month

American Bronze Spoon MoldThis month I am offering an antique American bronze spoon mold for sale. The style is often referred to as a rat-tail or Hanoverian spoon and dates to the mid-18th century. Overall mold length is 7 7/8″ and the spoon length is 7 5/16″. The mold halves fit snugly for easy casting. Price: $325.

Living History Famil PhotoPewter Collecting Tip

I’ve seen a lot of folks pick up an antique mug, tankard, or beaker and flip it over quickly to look for the makers (touchmark) on the underside of the vessel. Remember: A number of these items had their maker’s marks struck on the inside bottom! Take an extra minute to examine the inside of any pewter vessel you’re contemplating owning. It’s also a great place to spot signs of old repairs.

Living History Famil PhotoEVENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hillsborough’s Second Annual Living History Event, held August 21 & 22, was a real success. The weather cooperated and the crowds were plentiful, up almost 30% from last year! Patrons witnessed many historical reenactments and demonstrations around town. Hillsborough Center was the backdrop for several of the events including: pewter casting, blacksmithing, furniture making, cider pressing, a one room school house reenactment, and 18th century style magician, surry rides, and so much more. Look for this event to grow in 2011.

The 77th Annual Craftsman’s Fair at the Mount Sunapee Resort was also well attended. Preliminary results suggest sales were strong. It is reassuring to know the public supports and appreciates fine arts and crafts even during difficult economic times. My Centerpiece Bowl looked beautiful displayed atop a figured maple card table in the Living With Crafts Exhibit.

The Hillsborough Area Artisans Open Studio Tour, September 18 & 19, is coming up soon. I’ll have my shop open both days and plan to do some metal spinning demos. Visitors should remember to sign up for the door prize, a Wine Coaster with beaded edge.

ANTIQUE OF THE MONTH & FUN FACT

TD & SB Crown Handle Porringer

Ever heard the expression, “not worth a tinker’s dam”? In the eighteenth century, porringer handles were cast or burned directly to the finished porringer bowl. Expanding metal tongs, wrapped with linen, held the porringer bowl from the inside while the handle mold was placed carefully on the outside.

Molten pewter was poured into the handle mold and bonded to the bowl, hence the term, “burned on.” The linen cloth prevented the metal from rushing through the bowl and thus acted as a dam. This month’s antique highlights the linen mark of the tinker’s dam!

TD & SB Crown Handle PorringerTD & SB Crown Handle Porringer

This is a very fine Crown Handle Porringer by Thomas Danforth and his brother, Sherman Boardman, Hartford, CT circa 1810-20. The quality and condition of the metal, the well struck touch mark, and the crisp linen mark make this a wonderful addition to any pewter collection. The diameter of bowl is 4 15/16 inches. Price: $995.

My Latest Project

I recently acquired an important early 18th century wavy-end bronze spoon mold at auction. The mold is engraved with a royal portrait on the top and a fanciful scroll pattern on the underside of the bowl.

spoon detailInitially I thought it was of Queen Anne, but I’ve been talking with several pewter scholars recently and the consensus is it’s probably not a portrait of Queen Anne, but rather an earlier portrait of William III. This is William III, of William & Mary fame. Wow! Mary died in 1694. The mold was most likely produced/made in Boston circa 1694-1702.

Only a handful of these kinds of molds exist today, so they are as scarce as the proverbial hen’s teeth. I am indeed fortunate to have landed this wonderful mold. The overall spoon length is 7.25″ —Finished spoons sell for $20. This makes for a great soup spoon!

English Export Quart Tulip MugThis month’s featured antique is a fine 18th century English Export Quart Tulip Mug by Robert Bush, Sr. of Bristol, circa 1780s. Robert Bush Sr. and Jr. were major exporters to the colonies and the overall quality of their work and metal is excellent. This mug is no exception. On the inside bottom, the touchmark is faint due to some surface etching. Otherwise, this piece is in fine, overall condition.

Shrub Cups

A good customer here in New Hampshire brought in this ultra modern-looking glass several weeks ago and asked if I could reproduce it in pewter. He then told me that the model he was holding was an 18th century reproduction called a Shrub Glass. I was immediately hooked.

What’s a Shrub Glass you ask? It’s used for drinking the popular 18th century rum drink known as a Shrub. There are many Shrub recipes, but the rum version seems to have been the most favored. Look here for a recipe.

In any event, I think this design for our new Shrub Cups is great and the cup clearly can be used for a whole host of things including ice cream! Small size holds 5 fluid oz. and stands 4.25″ tall and the Large size holds 11 oz. and stands 5.5″ tall. Sure to be a popular item!

Impressed by New Hampshire’s Beauty

My friend, and New Hampshire Furniture Master member, Bill Thomas of Williams Thomas Custom Furniture, found a new piece of white oak and turned a beautiful new chuck for my Wood Grain Nut Bowl. I had no idea how hard it was to find a good, dry piece of white oak in these parts.

The end result is great and the grain pattern inside the pewter bowl is super! Pick one out for yourself, or give it as a truly unique gift item at a very reasonable price.

Keep Your Pewter In Tip Top Shape

Sometimes a small dent in a piece of pewter can be pushed down or ironed out with your thumb. Really! In fact, many of my wooden straightening tools are shaped like the human thumb in various sizes.

Before attempting to iron out a dent, clean the piece and submerge it in hot water for several minutes. Then dry the piece and hold it firmly while rubbing or ironing out the dent with your thumb. Take your time and move the metal slowly, as it is very pliant.

Give it a good polish and you’ll be good as new.

As I stand at my lathe and look outside at all of the snow, it’s hard to believe that Spring is just around the corner. After brisk year end sales, I’m rebuilding my inventory and looking forward to a better year. If the last four months of pewter sales are any indication of where the economy is headed, I’d say things are slowly improving. Fingers crossed.

Next month look for my new antiques page on the Gibson Pewter website. It will feature a few moderately priced, American and British antique pewter pieces!

I have not raised my prices for the last two years in spite of ever rising material and energy costs. But I know times are still tough for a lot of folks, including myself. Therefore, I’ll hold the line on prices again this year in an effort to keep you, my great customers, coming back for all of your gift-giving needs. Buying and supporting local producers I think is one element of community strength.

In addition to receiving my monthly Shop News newsletter, you can also stay in touch via Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. I was slow to hop on the social networking bandwagon, but slowly I’m finding my way and reconnecting with friends old and new.

How To Be the Stylish Center of Attention

We’re rolling out the Centerpiece Bowl this month. It is a real beauty. An original design and a contemporary form, it has a low flared rim with a distinctive beaded edge and an incised line on the inside bottom. At nearly 12″ in diameter and 2″ in height, it truly is worthy of being a centerpiece.

You’ll also be amazed at the capacity of this vessel. Fill it with fruit, nuts, veggies, or even a a low silk flower arrangment to bring cheer to your meals and get you through until he season of new buds.

A Place to Put That Steaming Mug of Cocoa

It’s been a long time in the planning stages, but I finally hunkered down and designed a modern-day sized coaster to match the base of larger mugs and other beverage holders. The Gibson Pewter version of Super Size Me!

Our Jumbo Coasters are almost 5″ in diameter and made from thick, heavy gauge pewter stock. They are rugged and ready to work. With an inside base diameter of 4″ (!), they can handle your biggest coffee mug or glass with ease. And these are nice and heavy. They won’t stick to the bottom of your glass the way other coasters often do.

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to learn to be a better cook. Actually, my wife, Camille, made that resolution for me. But it’s been great. In fact, I made my first leg of lamb for Christmas dinner and folks went back for seconds!

So what I’ve done is line my upper stovetop shelf with several of my Salt Bowls & Spoons and now use them for salt, pepper and other herbs and spices. Even though I’m a rookie cook, I now look like a pro… look out Julie & Julia!

Sincere Thanks for Your Support

Happy New Year from Gibson Pewter!

I am beginning 2010 with feelings of profound gratitude to all of you who have supported and encouraged me in these hard economic times. I took a full week off from work after Christmas to be with my family, enjoying the season and taking short day trips around beautiful New Hampshire. I now feel a renewed enthusiasm for my craft.

Despite these hard times, I’m looking forward to expanding my business and adding new products this year. December sales were strong. In fact, the sales line for the last quarter of 2009 pointed upward!

Valentine’s Day is Coming

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Get her (or him!) my new Fluted Bud Vase. With a single beautiful stem, it’s an affordable and elegant way to say, “I love you.”

Another good choice would be either the Small Heart Earrings or Large Heart Earrings we have in our growing jewelry line.

And here’s an idea for an “evergreen” valentine. Pick up or order a bunch of our small hearts. At only $5 each, they cost the same or less than sending out expensive greeting cards. These thoughtful gifts really make an impression. I know folks who carry one of our Gibson hearts around in their pocket every day!

Santa Jon

Black Friday—aka Pewter Friday—was a great success this year. I donned my stocking cap and played the parts both of working elf and jolly Santa. I think people enjoy shopping locally and seeing how things are made by hand.

Christmas in the Centre 2009 was also a wonderful event. Sales were strong, as happy crowds were out in force. Historic Hillsborough Centre looked great in the early evening hours with candles aglow in dwellings throughout the village. Very Rockwellian, and pleasing to enjoy a brief immersion in simpler times.

If you have a blank spot to fill on your gift-giving list, give me a call and we can select something appropriate just under the wire. We have gifts for every use and taste. And if you call this week, we can have items shipped in time for you to put tempting boxes under the tree.

Looking Ahead to 2010

I have two new product offerings in the works that are decidedly contemporary and original designs.

The Centerpiece Bowl is functional and beautiful. In fact, it may be the most beautiful piece I’ve ever created. Nearly 12″ in diameter with a distinctive beaded edge, it’s a low form bowl with a graceful shape that holds tons of fruit or anything you wish to feature as a centerpiece.

I’m also working on an oversize set of four coasters, aptly named, Jumbo Coasters. Nearly 5″ in diameter, these coasters can handle your biggest coffee mug or cup. And they’re heavy! No more sticky coasters.

Pewter Storage Tip

If you need to put your pewter in storage for a long period of time, take the time to pack it carefully.

I recommend wrapping your pewter piece(s) in a paper towel and then placing it in a zip lock bag. This protective measure will keep the surface of your pewter clean and also help prevent oxidization.

If you have multiple pieces to place in storage, use plenty of padding between pieces as pewter is a soft alloy and easily bent. These simple measures will protect your pewter ware for future use.

Pewter Cleaning Tip

Return the luster to your pewter plates

Before I polish my pewter plates, I soak them in extremely hot water for several minutes in a dish pan.

I take a pad of super fine steel wool (0000), place it in the water, squeeze it out, and apply a teaspoon of Dawn dish liquid. Then I take the plate out of the water and begin firmly rubbing the steel wool in a circular pattern from the middle to the outside diameter of the plate. Repeat this rubbing on both sides and dry the plate with a soft cotton towel or cloth.

I always apply a metal polish. I like (and sell) 3M Chrome & Metal Polish. Apply the polish with a cotton ball and wipe it away with a soft cotton rag before it dries.

Fill the dish pan again with hot water and rinse the plate while rubbing a few drops of the Dawn dish liquid on both sides of the plate. Dry the plate completely with a soft cotton cloth or diaper. I do this type of cleaning process to each of my plates at least once a year!

Shop News for April 2009

I’ve finished the sugar bowl, creamer and tray to go with the Queen Anne Teapots. So now we have a complete and elegant set!

Collectors have referred to this style of teapot as "Queen Anne" even though they were introduced during the reign of King George III (1760-1801), well after her reign (1704-1711). Some collectors refer to this type simply as an 18th century pear-shaped teapot. I think all would agree that whatever the name, the style is without rival. These teapots are beautiful and elegant.

It is exciting to now offer a full tea service. The Creamer shares the same style of cabriole foot as the teapot and has an applied spout. The Sugar Bowl has a beautiful beaded edge on the lid as well as the finial. The 12 1/2" Tray also has the distinctive beaded edge and is made from our heaviest gauge metal.

The Queen Anne Tea Service took a little over two years to complete. This project could not have been possible without the help of fellow craftsman, Bill Thomas, who made two outstanding sectional chucks; one for the teapot and another for the creamer. These collapsible forms allow me to shape the bodies out of a single piece of pewter, thereby eliminating a solder joint in the belly and the possibility of a future leak.

Fellow pewter enthusiast and antiques dealer, Wayne Hilt, loaned me a splendid 18th century creamer to help inspire the design of my creamer. Wayne also carved the model handle for the teapot which Bill now carves for me.

Last but not least, a special thanks to Lee Ring for making a wonderful 18th century type bronze mold for hollow casting the teapot spouts.

In between product development and rebuilding our inventory, I’ve been working on a couple of casting videos. We will throw up the spoon video next month.  Another, illustrating how the Dunham candlesticks are made, will be posted after we finish shooting the entire process.

I’ve been keeping busy, working on designing a sugar bowl, creamer and tray to go with the Queen Anne Teapots this winter. So we will have a complete and elegant set very soon!

It is so nice to have unique, hand-crafted pewter wedding gifts. It is very special to know that pewter gets better with age and will become a family heirloom.

As well as using the bridal registry, Gibson Pewter made great bridesmaid and groomsman gifts. Jon gave us excellent service and advice, and our guests remarked on how easy the ordering process was."
