Gibson Pewter Shop News - May-June 2012

Greetings,

The nesting Bluebirds in the meadow outside the shop are a joy to behold. We too are preparing for another busy Spring season in the pewter shop.

What’s New? Camille’s new Charm Bracelets have been a big hit! We’re creating many new charms so stay tuned to our website for future offerings. You can buy a finished bracelet and also purchase individual charms.

Meanwhile, I’ve been busy making chalices. Several of these are headed for Catholic Churches and that’s a fact that would have thrilled my father. Historically, the Catholic communion wares have been exclusively silver, or gold.

The Rosette Spoon.

Who said lightning never strikes twice? At the end of last year, a gentleman walked into my shop and asked me if I would like to buy his spoon mold. When he unwrapped the mold I was pleasantly suprised. Actually, my heart skipped a few beats. I was looking at another engraved spoon mold! Twenty years of looking for one of these and here was number two in my hands within three months time.

The Rosette Spoon, at 7.5″ in length, is the longest spoon we cast. It is what collectors call a Queen Anne style, or Dog Nose style spoon. The mold, made from bronze, was most likely made in New England around 1700! When compared to the William III Spoon, the Rosette Spoon mold seems to have been engraved by the same hand! Instead of a portrait, this mold has the beautiful decorative floral (rosette) motif seen in metalwork, furniture and architecture. A truly beautiful spoon.

Father’s Day!

Father’s Day is just around the corner ladies. Why not try one of our new Tulip Pint Mugs with Acanthus Leaf Handles this year. It’s a beautiful mug and he’ll never guess you bought it for yourself!

Antique of the Month

An early 19th century Unmarked American 1/2 Gallon Baluster Pewter Measure attributed to the Boardman Company. The measure is sealed, “W.W” and “AB” with the dates, 1814 and 1817. A rare and early example in fine condition. This piece would certainly be a great addition to any collection!

Upcoming Events

Please join us at the the 8th annual Hillsborough Area Artisans’ Spring into Summer Faire, Saturday and Sunday, June 9th & 10th, 10 am – 4 pm, rain or shine here in Historic Hillsborough Center. Admission is free- juried artists- live entertainment- good food- I’ll be demonstrating metal spinning both days.

We hope this message finds you all well. It would be great seeing you all sometime this year. The good news is that Historic Hillsborough Center is truly beautiful any time of year so plan a trip!

With all good wishes,
Jon & Camille Gibson
